Form and Function

It is interesting to think that no matter how many complain of the speed of change, only a few are able to imagine a world without internet or cell phones. Technologies, when successful, have a natural tendency to mix with the processes that are amplified and become invisible. Think about logistics or electricity, for example, they transform everyday life in such a way that its absence is almost a historical curiosity.

With digitalization and networks the same thing happens. They create challenges as they solve problems of past ages, in a process of increasing complexity and permanent imbalance, where there is no ideal state or end. We can never say that the world was digitized or computerized forever. I can not even know what that means, or whether we'll be there to witness it.

It is essential to understand the progress in its true form. The great mistake of information scientists of the last century was that the technology could synthesize intelligence. What we see is actually a sophisticated process of life itself, in which small organisms, and codependent fragile, and piggybacking to support each other in solving their problems while creating others in groups, in an evolutionary cycle. the world of the future must have a ecosystem of millions of technological devices of various sizes, whose behaviors seem organic. It will not, as previously thought, a unique, efficient, planned and clean. Instead, you have the face of what the market wants to pay. We are leaving a system in which the form followed function and that it made sense for a mechanical symbolic environment in which machines are dying faster than its users, the way in which not even know what its function.

É interessante pensar que, por mais que muitos se queixem da velocidade das mudanças, são poucos aqueles capazes de imaginar um mundo um mundo sem internet ou telefones celulares. As tecnologias, quando bem sucedidas, tem uma tendência natural a se misturar com os processos que se amplificam e se tornarem invisíveis. Pense em logística ou energia elétrica, por exemplo: elas transformam o cotidiano de tal maneira que a sua ausência é quase uma curiosidade histórica.

Com a digitalização e as redes acontece a mesma coisa. Elas criam desafios à medida que que resolvem problemas das épocas passadas, em um processo de complexidade crescente e desequilíbrio permanente, em que não há estado ideal ou final. Nunca poderemos dizer que o mundo foi computorizado ou digitalizado para sempre. Não dá nem para saber o que isso significa, ou mesmo se estaremos por lá para testemunhá-lo.

É fundamental compreender o progresso em sua verdadeira forma. O grande erro dos cientistas da informação do século passado foi acreditar que a tecnologia poderia sintetizar a inteligência. O que vemos na verdade é um processo sofisticado da própria vida, em que pequenos organismos, frágeis e codependentes, se apoiam e parasitam mutuamente, resolvendo seus problemas em grupos enquanto criam outros, em um ciclo evolutivo infinito. O mundo do futuro deverá ter um ecossistema de milhões de aparelhos tecnológicos de diversos tamanhos e cujos comportamentos parecerão orgânicos. Ele não será, como se pensava, um sistema único, eficiente, planejado e limpo. Ao contrário, terá a cara daquilo que o mercado quiser pagar. Estamos saindo de um sistema em que a forma seguia a função e que tudo fazia sentido mecânico para um ambiente simbólico em que as máquinas morrem mais rápido que seus usuários, em que a forma nem consegue saber qual é sua função.
