WELCOM E TO THE INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE: ENGLISH

English is present in our daily lives. If you have access to the internet, most of the information there is in English: if you like listening to pop songs, lots of them are in Egnlish; if you go to the cinema, most film productions are in English; in others words, we are in contact with English all the time.

There are about 700 million speakers of English around the world. In some countries it is the first language, like in the USA and United Kingdom. In Canada, for example, people speak English and French as official languages.

But is the language the same in all these contexts of use? Of course not. There are many different kinds of English. For example, a Brithis pearson would call a taxi to go home, but an American would call a cab; a student at school in USA uses an eraser, whereas a school boy in England uses a rubber. And an American inside a bank waits in line, whereas a Brithis waits in a queue.

O inglês está presente em nossas vidas diariamente. Se você acessa a internet, a maioria das informações lá estão em inglês: se você gosta de ouvir canções populares, uma porção delas estão em inglês; se você vai ao cinema , a maioria dos filmes estão em inglês; em outras palavras, estamos em contato com o inglês todo o tempo.

Existem em torno de 700 milhões de falantes de inglês ao redor do mundo. Em alguns países como EUA e Reino Unido, ele é a primeira língua. No Canada, por exemplo, as pessoas falam inglês e frances como língua oficial.

Mas a língua é a mesma em todos os contextos de uso? Naturalmente não. Há muitas formas diferentes de inglês. Por exemplo, uma pessoa britânica chamaria um taxi para ir pra casa, mas um americano chamaria um cab (taxi); um estudante nos EUA usa um apagador, enquanto que um garoto na Inglaterra usa uma borracha. E um Americano dentro de um banco espera em linha (fila) enquanto que um britânico espera em fila.
